This year's Day of the Dead at SomArts is dedicated to the Gulf States residents who lost their lives in the days and weeks after hurricane Katrina. Special altars for those we have lost this past year - Tom Fowler, an artist who for many years participated in the SomArts Day of the Dead exhibits; Luis Cervantes, artist and architect in the Mission District; and Chet Helms, producer of 1960s rock groups, such as Janice Joplin and Big Brother and the Holding Company. Co-curated by Rene Yañez and architect Nick Gomez, this year's Day of the Dead also features an art contest for youth 18 and under. Two thousand dollars in cash prizes will be awarded.
